Bring definition, depth and a distinctive brass colour to your playing with the Wessex CB90P F/E♭ cimbasso. Its focused, trombone-like sound provides a powerful foundation beneath the trombone section, opening up a different palette for orchestral performance, recording and solo work.

Rooted in Italian opera

The cimbasso is closely associated with Italian opera, particularly the music of Verdi. Its appeal lies in the way its sound connects with the trombones, helping the low brass speak as a unified section.

That character also makes it an expressive choice for film music, where it can contribute weight and clarity to dramatic brass writing.

Play in F or E♭

The CB90P comes with a second main tuning slide for playing in E♭. Fit this slide and pull out the individual valve slides accordingly to change the instrument from F to E♭.

This gives players a choice of two configurations, including the option to use familiar E♭ tuba fingerings.

Musical possibilities beyond the orchestra

The CB90P offers tuba players another voice to explore. Use it to introduce contrasting colours in a recital, experiment with jazz textures or bring a more concentrated sound to an ensemble.

Its five rotary valves and tuning trigger provide flexibility in performance. Based on a German design, the instrument incorporates additional Wessex bracing for strength in use.

Frequently asked questions

Can the CB90P be played in both F and E♭?

Yes. The CB90P is supplied with a second main tuning slide for E♭. To play in E♭, fit this slide and pull out the individual valve slides accordingly.

How does a cimbasso differ from a tuba?

A cimbasso has a more focused, trombone-like character. It offers a contrasting sound to the broader voice of a tuba.

What is a cimbasso used for?

Italian opera is a central part of its repertoire. It also has applications in film recording, contemporary ensembles, jazz and solo performance.

Is it the same as a contrabass trombone?

No. Although their musical roles can overlap, the CB90P uses rotary valves rather than a trombone slide.

Does the CB90P include a case and mouthpiece?

Yes. A hard wheeled case and Wessex cimbasso mouthpiece are included, along with the second main tuning slide for E♭.
